Rachida Q’marr Amara is a courageous artist whose work pushes boundaries and reinvents forms in ways that challenge the art world in her native Tunisia. But despite the resistance she often faces, Rachida soldiers on; producing haunting images that are both the product of stunning  technique and and astonishing honesty.

Upon returning to France and despite her training in glass art, Rachida’s passion for engraving emerged. It is through the warm colored engravings of faceless silhouettes that she attempts to express her vision of humankind. In our frantic race to catch up with our own bodies, the artist believes, we often become absorbed, and we ask the question – towards which beach, which desert, which immense land should one head to in order to rekindle one’s absent soul?

For Rachida, it is through art. Art is the only thing left to rip apart our everyday stresses and contradictory fluxes.  In her own sensitive but highly technical way, she offers compositions that radiate a beautiful music and rhythm. Her quest for light has led her toward a kind of expressiveness that truly reflects her existentialist mood.

Rachida’s work is renowned and appreciated worldwide – particularly in Italy, where she has traveled and held a number of highly successful exhibitions. But it was at the Abdellia Palace, during the 2008 La Marsa Spring of the Arts exhibit that her presence as a master engraver gained recognition. From her own art studio, she has since converted tens of her artist friends and students to the magic of engraving. The video below entitled “Fragments,” highlights her remarkable technique.

Today, her characters break free, and having crossed paths so often, they settle into a vision of impossible freedom. Through their individual determination, they announce the emotional maturation of the work of Rachida Amara.
